When I was religious, I thought the Golden Rule the peak of morality. When I discovered nearly every religion had an equivalent of Jesus’s command to “do unto others as you would have them do unto you,” I concluded this maxim a universal truth. I preached and promoted it as the best measure of moral righteousness. I often used it to determine a course of action in my personal life.
